All are well maintained and none are crowded. If lighthouses are your thing there are plenty in the area. Just minutes away is West Quoddy. At the easternmost point of the United States, you will find the famous red-and-white striped lighthouse. Travel a bit further to Campobello (passport required) and the East Quoddy Lightstation, known as the "Head Harbour Light" to local residents, the tower is designated as a Classified Heritage Site. If you want to tour the lighthouse plan your visit for low tide. This is the only time the lighthouse is accessible. On your way back to the US be sure to stop and enjoy Roosevelt Campobello International Park. This is a charming, natural wonder located on Campobello Island where the late U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt spent his summers with his wife, Eleanor, and their children. It’s easy to see what brought the man who became a great American president back to this Canadian island year after year- the unspoiled beauty of the spectacular Bay of Fundy is simply irresistible. For a special treat time your visit to have "Tea with Eleanor." Or once back in Lubec and have dinner on the deck at Frank's Dockside. Enjoy some excellent food including local specials while watching the seals play in the narrows. For another day’s adventure go whale watching - see humpbacks, finbacks, and minkes that seasonally frequent our water. There are several guided excursion and tour boats to choose from. You’ll also see plenty of dolphins sluicing around you and harbor seals popping their heads above the surface or sunning themselves on ledges. Lobster! Come aboard a classic Downeast lobster boat for a truly authentic Maine experience. Enjoy a personalized, fun-filled family adventure in beautiful Downeast Maine. You can haul (or watch) up lobster traps to discover what treasures Maine waters. Or pick up a basket full fresh off the boat at one of the many pounds and have a feast. DownEast has a wealth of bird watching opportunities. Among birds, you’ll see harlequin ducks waggling their way across harbors, herons swooping over marshes, ospreys perched in their huge nests atop trees, and eagles regally watching over all. You can even take excursions to the outer islands to spy the Atlantic puffin, often called “sea parrots” for their colorful look. For a true Maine wilderness experience, you can take an inland excursion—by foot, canoe, kayak, air-conditioned van, or pontoon boat—to see the moose, Maine’s official state animal. Weighing over 1,000 pounds, with antlers reaching five feet across, they are majestic animals, most active at sunrise and sunset. You might even see a moose along the roads, nibbling the vegetation! An amazing vacation experience in rural Maine. In 20 minutes or less, you can be in the historic town of Machias. Check out the Burnham Tavern Museum, this local historical site maintained and operated by local women in the DAR. Learn about the battle of the Margharetta, the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War. Take a stole through Bad Little Falls and learn the how Machias was named. Then head over to the solar-evaporated Maine sea salt plant. Finish the adventure at Helen's Restaurant world famous for their Blueberry Pie. Take a drive to Eastport the easternmost city in the United States (Lubec is further east but is a town) on Moose Island. Enjoy the local shops and the Overlook Park walk. Welcome to Bear Beach Maine! If you are looking for a cozy yet spacious and extremely well-appointed home nestled peacefully in the woods and directly on a secluded, sandy beach this is your place! From the moment you walk through the door you will feel warmly greeted by this log home designed to resemble an early American lodge. The open concept great room with its cathedral ceiling, large field-stone fireplace and comfy furnishings are equally favorable for both larger gatherings and intimate parties of two. The sunlight streams through the expansive windows in the afternoon. Enjoy a fire, a glass of wine or hot chocolate and a good book or movie on the Blu-ray/DVD player for a perfect day of relaxation. There are two dining areas within the open concept, each with expandable leaves allowing plenty of room for meal time guests or family game nights. The hutch/book case contains enough games and puzzles to make even a rainy or snowy day enjoyable. Or head to the basement for a game of Foosball or ping pong (Some call it beer pong). A wooden folding table next to the hutch can be set up as a "working vacation" desk...Sometimes its needed. We do have free wifi! In the kitchen you will find nearly everything imaginable to make gourmet meals or heat up a frozen dinner. From spices to a lobster pot, cast iron cookware, electric griddle, both Keurig and regular coffee makers, microwave, toaster, crock pot, wine cooler with lots of beverage glasses! If something is missing, you probably just have not found it yet. Sleep soundly in the master queen bed to the sound of the ocean or to a crackling fire in the master fireplace. But first, unwind in the warmth of the claw foot soaking tub in the connecting bathroom. On the same level, in the other wing of the house, are two bedrooms and the second full bathroom. Both have queen beds, one also has an ocean view with sliding doors to the covered oceanfront deck where you can sip your morning coffee while listening to the sounds of sea birds and lobster boats. The spacious loft with four twin beds overlooks the great room and has stunning views of the ocean and also the back yard. Arguably, the most fun part of the house is not even IN the house. The Bare Den is located in the back yard and houses the sauna with cool-down room (open all year) and also the out-door shower (open seasonally). Nothing is as refreshing as taking a warm shower in the open air while watching the ocean and an occasional bald eagle flying overhead. Its also great for rinsing off sandy feet or pets! And at the end of a day, relaxing every muscle in the heat of the sauna and cooling down with an icy beverage is simply magical. Bear Beach Maine is located on Holmes Bay in the town of Cutler. Because the house faces West on the bay, it enjoys the most gorgeous sunsets over the ocean. Relax on the front deck with a glass of wine, chilled cocktail or cup of coffee and its hard not to reflect on the many blessings of the day as the sun falls below the horizon. Head down the staircase in front of the house to the sandy beach. Enjoy long walks along the varying shoreline at lower tide, or have kayaks delivered to the house from Sunrise Canoe and Kayak to view the coast from a whole different perspective. Pack a picnic lunch and kayak over to Hog Island a 15-20 minute paddle from the front of the house. A short hike around the island will have you searching for the Indian rock carvings (petroglyphs) which were pecked into ledges hundreds of years ago by the Algonquin Indians. These unique carvings are located on the southwest side of the island and are engraved into the latent shale stone. If you do find the need to leave the house (like to get lobsters) head just a few miles out to Little River Lobster in the town of Cutler and watch your dinner come straight from the ocean to your table! At the end of our road, stop by A to Z Variety and pick up some freshly-harvested clams right from Holmes Bay! Add to that an amazing selection of fine wine and beer from all over the world (and local varieties) at the French Cellar in Machias, and you will have a meal to remember! Be sure to click on the video (the last picture when scrolling through the pictures at the top) to get a better idea of the flow of the house and property. Or check out this link http://www.youtube.com/embed/cQskAauhVVc?rel=0 Other fun suggestions: Cutler Harbor is considered one of the prettiest little harbors in Maine. And there you will find The Bold Coast Charter Company where Captain Andy Patterson can take you to Machias Seal Island to view the largest puffin colony along the coast of Maine. His tours book up very fast, so book early! A few miles further toward the town of Milbridge, Robertson Sea Tours offers a number of unique and very educational tours including a whale-watching tour. Captain Robertson was a teacher who followed his dream of owning a tour company and becoming a commercial fisherman. He knows how to impart his knowledge and love of the ocean area to others! Bear Beach Maine is also only a few minutes drive from two of the most spectacular ocean-side hiking trails on the east coast, the Western Head Trail (located on the west side of Cutler harbor) and the Bold Coast Trail (located just to east of Cutler harbor). Both of these hikes expose area guests to some of Maine's most rugged and bold crashing-surf shorelines east of Acadia. Guests can also visit scenic Lubec where West Quoddy Head light house is located and its wonderful coastal hiking trail. Don't forget to stop by Monica's Chocolates for a decadent selection of hand-made Peruvian chocolates (She gives free samples!) Just across the bridge from Lubec is Canada's Campobello Island and the location of President Theodore and Eleanor Roosevelt's summer home. This is probably the best free tour you will ever take especially if you are able to score tickets to the morning seating of "Tea With Eleanor"...Keep in mind that Campabello Island is in the Atlantic time zone when making plans. Both Lubec and Campobello Island are only 30 minutes from Bear Beach Maine. Also, New Brunswick, Canada is only 1 hour and 15 minutes away, and Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are just 2 hours from the house. These destinations are easy day trips from the property. The house is 2 hours from Bangor International Airport, 5 hours from the Portland Jetport, 7 hours from Boston and 11 hours from New York City. Bear Beach Maine is available all year. There is a four-night minimum stay. The months of June through mid October are rented on a weekly basis only with Saturday as the "change over" day. Both a 50% deposit and a signed rental agreement are required before your reservation is confirmed. The balance of rental fees and a $500 refundable security/damage deposit is due 30 days prior to your arrival. Your well-behaved dogs are welcome with no additional pet fee (We trust that that pet parents are responsible and will remove waste from the yard before departure...Should additional cleaning be required, it will be deducted from the security deposit) Cats are not permitted due to severe allergies. We have a strict "No Smoking" policy that is clearly addressed in the rental agreement. Smoking is not allowed inside the house or Bare Den. We have two security cameras on the property. One is located on the front deck aimed at the driveway. The other is on the back deck and captures the entry door. We have absolutely no interior cameras (There are some things a mom does not want to know) Rates subject to change anytime until booking & deposit Ask about monthly rentals While our cancellation policy is 100% refund with more than 60 days notice from arrival day, the service fee to VRBO/Homeaway is non refundable. We look forward to sharing our little piece of coastal heaven with you!

From its perch on a beautiful wooded bluff, Salt River Cottage offers you stunning views of the water from every common room. At night, you’ll be dazzled by the countless stars and, with the rising sun, be greeted by songbirds and cries of bald eagles (and perhaps the distant mooing of the Scottish highland cattle across the river!). The rivers' confluence provides a constantly changing vista and perfect space for wildlife viewing. At low tide, look for tracks of deer and moose, flip rocks to discover tiny intertidal creatures, or comb the shore for sea glass. At high tide, walk the shoreline path, watching for the occasional bobbing head of a curious harbor seal and the spectacular plunges of hungry osprey (called "fish eagles" by the locals) diving for fish. The Cottage provides clean, traditional accommodations for up to six guests (with a sofa bed and camp cot allowing expansion up to 9).

The Blueberry Festival held in August, and Margaretta Days (in June), which celebrates the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War fought in Machias Bay, bring people from all over the country to Machias. Offering tours of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s summer family cottage. And round out the day with a fun series of ferry rides as you island-hop around Passamaquoddy Bay. • Eastport: A charming revitalized town and artist colony offering many galleries and lovely shops and a music festival every year. • Saint Andrews (Canada): About 1.5 hours north is very worthwhile for shopping, golf, gardens and fine dining. • Acadia National Park: A 2 hour drive south (if you don’t stop at the blueberry wineries along the way!). Be the first person in the US any day you are here to see the sun rise on top of Cadillac Mountain. Visit the charming towns of Bar Harbor (shopping), South West Harbor and North East Harbor. Or simply relax and enjoy the peace, gardens and sea breezes from our beautiful deck at the Captain's House.

Seacliff is a charming three-bedroom, one level, shabby-chic summer cottage. It is privately situated in the quiet village of Starboard Cove on Maine’s pristine Downeast coastline. The large porch just feet from the water awaits your early (or late) morning coffee, and another deck with steps leading down to the rock covered beach allows direct access to the water’s edge. Seacliff’s front yard is the Atlantic Ocean and dramatic open ocean and coastal island views await you. If the fog comes in, sit back with a good book and enjoy the warmth and crackle of the expansive coastal rock fireplace. Although you can’t see it, you’ll also hear the plaintive sound of Libby Lighthouse . . . life is good. Just a few steps from the main cottage is Downeast, a cozy and charming one room guest cottage, fully equipped with a kitchenette, queen size bed and a three-quarter bath. Downeast can be rented along with Seacliff for an additional fee if you have lots of family/guests. Part of the allure of Machias is its obstinate resistance to giving up its local charm. Although you’ll find a large well-equipped grocery store, you won’t find a Wal-Mart. And while you’ll find a McDonald’s and a Dunkin Donuts, you won’t find a Chucky Cheese. There is a Rite-Aid, bank, several gas stations, and some great local family restaurants that you won’t want to miss! From Seacliff, you can follow a winding dirt road that starts right after Seacliff and leads to idyllic views and a natural gravel bar that leads to Starboard Island. Although Starboard Island is privately owned, the walk on the bar is well worth the time. Also, located just a mile from Seacliff is one of the most unusual beaches anywhere, Jasper Beach. The multicolored pebbles of Jasper Beach paint an exquisite and rare coastline. In addition, there are many day trip options in the area including: West Quoddy Head in Lubec Maine (45 minute drive from Seacliff) which is home to West Quoddy Head Light -- the only candy-striped lighthouse in the U.S.A., Campabello Island, Canada and East Quoddy Head (less than an hour from Seacliff) where you can take the International Bridge to Campabello Island, Canada and visit Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s summer “cottage.” And then there’s the world famous Acadia National Park and Mt Desert Island (two hours from Seacliff). In order to make this a pleasant rental for all smoking is not allowed inside the cottage. *The Owner Cancellation Policy is as described in the Rental Agreement. This Rental Agreement refund/cancellation policy supersedes any cancellation/refund policy you may have read on VRBO/HomeAway sites regarding our cottage. Wicked Awesome Maine Vacation Rentals is licensed in the state of Maine, and proud members of the Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce and Maine Tourism Association. ************************************************ Welcome home to the FRISKY FISH COTTAGE! FIRST FLOOR BATHROOM --Tub/shower combo --Stackable washer/dryer FIRST FLOOR BEDROOM --Queen bed with memory foam mattress. We use fluffy duvets with freshly washed covers. MASTER BEDROOM LOFT --King bed with a pillow-top mattress - fluffy duvets with freshly washed covers and crisp sheets. --Small sitting area overlooking the harbor UPSTAIRS BATH --small half bath For Kidlets - We offer outlet covers, high chair and pack and play upon request. We also have board games and outdoor games like bocce and cornhole. We also have fun activities like scavenger hunts and ice cream makers. (However, the property is not childproofed and waterfront, so proper supervision is necessary, of course). THE YARD The yard is a waterfront, park-like lawn, meadow and gardens. The large, one acre yard also houses our glamping retreat, Camp From-Away, which sleeps a maximum of 2 people (opening summer 2020). Each cottage has its own yard space separated by a privacy fence. Generally, the only part of the yard that is shared is a six foot access path in between the two cottages to a sandy entry point to the water (the property also abuts a public rocky beach for additional access). Depending on the time of year that you visit, the gardens may be in full bloom -- I'd love to take credit, but they were planted by the prior owner -- quite frankly, I'm surprised I've been able to, not only keep them alive, but actually thrive. Behind the old boatlaunch is an easy access to launch a kayak (shared access with property next door). All of our property is SMOKE FREE. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE I am a local real estate agent and property manager and am usually within 30 minutes of the cottage, should you need assistance with anything during your stay (unless I am traveling myself). We have many guests who seek out our cottage, specifically because it's tidal. WHAT EXACTLY DOES IT MEAN TO BE ON A TIDAL HARBOR IN DOWNEAST MAINE? We are very close to the Bay of Fundy, in Canada, which has the highest tidal ranges in the world and is one of the seven wonders of the world. These extreme tidal areas are the reasons many tourists come to these spots- not only for the phenomenon of the extreme tides but also for the amazing bird watching as well as the sea creatures drawn to the area. Twice a day, the water recedes almost completely from the harbor, and twice a day, water fills the basin. It’s fascinating to see the fishermen access their traps by driving their truck directly on the ocean floor in the middle of the harbor during low tide, just where boats had been a few hours before. We have a ton of information on things to do in the area -- puffin tours, great pie, things to do with kids, etc. on our property website which can be found via internet search. NEAREST BEACHES: ***Finn Beach -- adjacent to cottage - a short, rocky beach where fishermen launch their dayboats. (not a swimming beach). ***Jasper Beach - 1 mile ***Greys Beach - 2 miles ***Roque Bluffs State Park beach - 12 miles LOCATION INFORMATION Bucks Harbor is the working fishing/lobstering village in the town of Machiasport, Maine. You will hear the chug-chug-chug of the boats in the harbor and the caw of the gulls and breathe in the salty ocean air. The harbor is filled with fishing and other commercial vessels and floats piled with lobster traps. You never know what kind of boat will be pulled up on the beach or moored in the harbor. Across the water, you will see the commercial pier loading and unloading often at the salmon farm. Both across the water and sometimes, just across the street, you might hear the bahhh of sheep as they graze the various surrounding fields. The Frisky Fish is also just under a mile to the world famous Jasper Beach with it's melodious and unique music from the waves hitting the rocks. A must not miss experience. GETTING AROUND The Frisky Fish is approximately 10 miles from the nearest town of Machias with a grocery store, restaurants including the famous -Helens, known for their delicious blueberry pie , -The French Cellar - a wine and cheese store, -Whole Life Natural Foods & Cafe, etc. You can walk to the nearest lobster pound - BBS Lobster Trap, just around the corner and over the hill (although, then again, if you walk, you'll have to walk back home carrying a dinner that may be a little rambunctious) or visit "Mother Shuckers Lobsters" in Roque Bluffs on your way home from a day at the state park and sandy beach. Both lobster options are fresh off the boat. We are approximately one hour from the Canadian border (bring your passport) -- extraordinary day trips can be taken to St. Andrews, Campobello Island and St. John. We are approximately two hours from Acadia National Park main entrance and Bar Harbor (translate.... two hours Away from the TRAFFIC and CROWDS of Bar Harbor). Or consider Winter Harbor and Schoodic -- the quiet side of Acadia, about an hour away, an easy day trip. Both Eastport and Lubec are less than an hour drive. For hiking closer to home, there are extraordinary hiking trails all around. We are about two hours from Bangor Int'l Airport and about four hours from the Portland Jetway. We have many guests to the area who fly into Portland and meander up the coast, stopping for lunch or dinner in one of the myriad seaside towns. Please make sure of your plans. While we have a 60 day cancellation policy, VRBO/Homeaway service fees are generally non-refundable. Please note: Quotes generated by the VRBO system are usually, but not 100%, accurate so quotes (very occasionally) may need to be altered before/during booking.

The land is the safe place for your heart; the sea is the wild place for your spirit; the sky is the imaginative place for your dreams. With all three right in front of you, you will feel that this is the place for you. The Frisky Fish Cottage sits on a small cove close to the water with a shoreline of roughly 125 feet. Internal and external views of the outside blend into each other; choose the panorama either from the comfort of the sofa or from adirondack chairs outside by the fire pit. From every window or from the unbounded ‘window,’ the view from the sea predominates. When you lay down for a nap, you may see a receded waterline with fishermen driving by in their trucks; when you wake up, you may hear the lapping waters of the incoming tide and watch those same fishermen riding out on their boats. The cottage is small enough to charm but not large enough to overwhelm with its one and half stories. From the loft, look out over the welcoming living room with its cathedral-like ceilings. The open concept design allows the sunlight to dazzle you from the wide windows that overlook the water. The kitchen and a breakfast bar are tucked in a corner - hidden away to be useful but not to intrude on the main grandeur. Or turn to the tastefully decorated loft bedroom with its attached half-bath. A downstairs bedroom and a full bath (with laundry facilities) complete the accommodations. Whether you come here to relax or to work, billowing breezes, beckoning beaches, spectacular sunsets, winter wonders, available amenities and convenient conveniences complete the possibilities.

If you are looking for an experience that reflects the Maine of your childhood…a simpler time, with no cruise ships full of tourists, no bumper to bumper traffic, no tourist trap restaurants or gift shops full of Made in China souvenirs then read on…. This is your opportunity to escape climate change, when you come to Lubec it will be 75 degrees while the rest of the country is 100 degrees. Clean, salty, crisp ocean breeze keeps Lubec temperate and naturally comfortable. Lubec's night sky explodes with the Milky Way, 25 million light years away in a sky literally filled with millions of stars on a typical clear night. Boot Cove is located near the idyllic town of Lubec, Maine…the land that time forgot and the easternmost town in the United States. See our website for Things to Do in the area...www.bootcovehome.com. A small fishing village perched on the Atlantic Ocean in the northern reaches of Maine…Lubec is a tiny hamlet of colorful historic cottages settled on a hill overlooking the Bay of Fundy and the wild Atlantic beyond. A tiny main street provides all the basic necessities…a coffee shop, several restaurants, a couple of classic Maine seafood shacks, and a quaint grocery store. Lubec was recently rated as one of America’s top 10 beach towns by Town and Leisure. You can catch a passenger ferry at the town pier to visit Eastport for a fun day trip or you can opt for a fascinating day of whale watching…to experience the abundance of whales, multitudes of birds, seals and dolphin that populate the native waters. Or you can take the short bridge from Lubec to Canada and explore the sites of Campobello Island, including the summer home of FDR. Naturalists from all over the world consider this part of Maine the most untouched in the Northeast. And your home sits in one of the most beautiful stretches of the Atlantic coast in Washington County. Boot Cove is 2.5 hours from Bangor Airport and 2 hours from Bar Harbor Airport. Private flights can be arranged at private airports in Easport (45 minutes from Boot Cove) or Machias (40 minutes from Boot Cove) Just a 12 minute (beautiful) drive from town, Boot Cove is perched on a dramatic 46-acre bluff overlooking the astounding vastness of the Atlantic Ocean. This extremely private compound is surrounded on all sides by miles of wildlife preserves that populate the property with rare bird species, an abundance of eagles, hawks, owl, white tailed deer, adorable fisher, lynx, wild turkey, pheasant…and if you are lucky…the enigmatic moose. You enter the property at magnificent stone outcropping with gate and travel down a 1/2 mile winding drive to the main house which is perched 100 feet above the ocean with views across the sea. A wrap around deck leads you to world class views uncluttered by ANY other houses. In fact your closest neighbor is invisible…and a half of a mile away. With an abundance of comfortable luxury outdoor seating you will be mesmerized by the constant influx of whales, seal, eagles and cormorants from their surrounding habitats. This is the place to contemplate life, read a book, rest and be at peace. SPOILER ALERT!!! The open concept kitchen is all new and beautiful...and the kitchen windows overlook the OCEAN!! Watch seals and bald eagles from the kitchen while you are creating wonderful meals with local ingredients!!! Your home was built in 2014 in the style of a classic down east Maine cape. Cedar shingles and red mullioned windows hint at the classic luxury within. Entry through the front door basically takes your breath away as your eyes are drawn immediately to the spectacular ocean views from every point in the open concept living/dining room and kitchen. Super comfortable furnishings include an extra deep wrap around couch and modern swivel chairs covered in luxury Italian velvets and Belgian linens in colors that reflect the ocean and the sky. A beautiful, well-appointed bathroom with tub is shared by the South bedroom and the adjacent guest bedroom. The guest bedroom is the most modestly sized bedroom in the house with a comfortable queen bed and a luxury Rubelli clad chaise lounge. The media room on the lower level is a naturally cooled media cave with cloud sofa seating and Clarence House swivel rockers to enjoy the 86" flat screen. A 5 minute hike away, the Guest House, which sleeps 7, is perched on a small hill with a lovely wooded path leading to the main house. As the original farmhouse structure to the property, this simple and private home has been updated with fresh finishes and a tasteful mixture of modern comforts and French antiques with touches of Maine. It has 2 beautiful, new bathrooms with marble vanities, a crisp new shower and a luxury soaking tub. The Guest House has a separate driveway and enjoys a roof top deck with ocean views. Bring a picnic!!! (but we BEG you please leave this pristine paradise as you found it!!!) All trails lead to the spectacular Boot Cove shoreline and cliffs. They are unspeakably beautiful and in some spots treacherous… so please exercise extreme caution in these areas. Children must be supervised at all times and adults need to be super careful too. This is wildest that the bold coast of Maine has to offer. Off property within a 5-10 minute ride, you will find a multitude of nature preserves with hiking trails unlike any other spot in the world. She can easily orchestrate your outdoor lobster feast!! All you have to do is show up with your glass of wine and every detail is done (We ask that all lobster/clam bakes etc. are held outside on the deck adjacent to the kitchen. For further nuances to consider please visit our website: www.bootcovehome.com for Things to Do in the area. Remember those hiking boots!!! Bring your binoculars, your telescope, your camera, your night sky app, your drone!!!!! Bring your fishing poles!...fish off of the town breakwater, Lake Gardner, a multitude of park areas or right off of our private waters. Bring your bikes!!!! The roads are safe, plentiful and incredibly scenic. Bring your golf clubs!!! Nine hole waterfront golf course on Campobello Island or travel a bit to Saint Andrews for an elite and beautiful golf experience. Perfect retreat for girls trips, boys trips, business strategy meetings, family reunions, eco-tourism, bicycling enthusiasts. Kayakers/canoers, hikers, intimate weddings, special family gatherings, all on your own private nature reserve (for larger gatherings - written permission is required and additional fees may apply). Al fresco lobster dinners are an absolute must during your stay…we have created a beautiful outdoor spot for 8-10 on the deck overlooking the ocean. For a larger group…please inquire. We ask that all seafood feasts remain strictly outdoors. Additionally, all breaking down of seafood including fresh caught fish remain outdoors. **Families with children must be aware that this property is located in a wilderness area surrounded by ocean and cliffs which can be treacherous. The private trails are dangerous and unsuitable for children. The home is surrounded by a deck which allows unencumbered ocean views and few railings.

Area attractions include four lighthouses within 15 miles. One of them, picturesque West Quoddy Head Light with its red and white stripes, is the most eastern point in the United States. There are sandy beaches, as well as, bold coastal cliffs. Campobello Island, Canada (passport required) is only a 10 minute drive and well worth the visit. Like Hiking? The Lubec area has three state parks, a national wildlife refuge, and several nature preserves all with trails to see nature at its best. Designed to evoke a ship, this stylish 2BD home overlooks the ocean and is surrounded by 50 acres of woods, wildlife, and area beaches. Complete privacy but only 17 min from town. Hike, kayak, BBQ, explore Downeast harbors, or just relax on the deck. The Prowhouse was designed by Machiasport poet and sea captain Phil Rose to evoke the prow of a ship. The home's distinctive, angular 'prow' and its floor-to-ceiling windows overlook Howards Cove, a lovely crescent of ocean water and woodlands cupped in the north by unique Jasper Beach. In addition to the remarkable view, our guests enjoy complete solitude — there's only one other home remotely visible and it's across the cove about a mile away. The Prowhouse fits 4 people comfortably. The master bedroom has large windows with a dizzying view over the cliff to the ocean floor below. The second bedroom is smaller but is very cozy; it's walls are covered with blue and gold-colored nautical maps of New England. The downstairs has a handsome living room, dining area, kitchen and bathroom. The style of the home's decor is a mix of mid-century modern and nautical aesthetic, i.e. lots vintage furnishings in teak and brass. While the Prowhouse is newly renovated with all modern amenities, you'll feel as if you've stepped into the 50s or 60s when you walk through the door. For instance, you'll find furniture, art, and design by mid-century Modernists Paul McCobb, Norman Cherner, Percival Lafer, and Curtis Jere. A library corner contains a Danish desk, vintage books, an old rotary phone, an Olivetti typewriter, and a classic Thorens turntable. Most of the paintings and photographs throughout the house are unconventional takes on natural and nautical themes. (Don't expect twee paintings of sea captains and lighthouses when the real deal is just outdoors.) When the sun is out and the weather warm, enjoy the Prowhouse's spacious deck and picnic table at the cliff's edge. The Prowhouse grounds are fun to explore with small paths threading through the trees, along the cliff's edge, up stone steps and into small gorges. House Details: 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom Guests have access to the entire home, except the cellar. Amenities include a new washer, dryer, and gas stove as well as a coffee maker, grinder, blender, microwave, waffle iron, lobster pot, and all kitchen essentials. You'll find a BBQ grill out on the deck along with chairs and loungers. The bathroom is on the first floor and has a shower (no tub). All linens are included as well as bathroom amenities. Please note: the smaller bedroom, which is right next to the master bed upstairs, doesn't have its own door due to the home's quirky architecture, but when the master bedroom door is shut, the second bedroom becomes private by default. Hope that makes some sense. About the area: Machiasport, according to the popular travel guide Lonely Planet, is the 'real Downeast.' So if you stay here, don't expect crowds of camera-toting tourists ( you'll find those 1.5 hours south of us in Bar Harbor.) Machiasport, instead, is for those seeking an intimate and authentic experience of Maine coast culture. The experience first unfolds from the seat of your car; Port Road, leading from the town of Machias to Machiasport, is quiet and unassuming but full of character. The road meanders past marshes, woods, and mudflats; passes stacks of lobster traps, lopsided barns and lobster boats, and resident homes of varying repair and personality. We love trips in and out of town. So will you. Just off the end of Port Road, and down Rose Lane (a quarter mile dirt road through the trees), you'll find the Prowhouse perched atop Rose Ledge. While the home's location is wonderfully idyllic surrounded by acres of trees and wildlife — it's hardly idle; Howards Cove will serve as your own private seaside-theater, presenting you daily with a small parade of lobster boats, seabirds, seals, kayakers, and dramatically expressive clouds. Looking out our windows or standing on Rose Ledge, you'll also see Cutler's distant radio towers that twinkle at night; you'll catch the silhouette of salmon farms against the sea, and, a little farther afield, you'll discover Libby Island Lighthouse whose intermittent flash and foghorn add ambiance to your stay. (Did I say foghorn? Yes, indeed I did. The price we Mainers pay for such traditional New England iconography is, of course, the existence of fog. However, if you're a fan of the Scottish Highlands or misty, medieval forests carpeted in thick mosses and dark tree trunks, you'll find the foggy days an authentic part of the Downeast package. The Prowhouse is surrounded by 50 acres of woods and wildlife, including some rocky beaches complete with caves and vertiginous cliffs. Wildlife seen around the property include bald eagles, seals, deer, porcupine, harbor porpoises, foxes, and even moose. As mentioned before, the Prowhouse is perched upon one such cliff called Rose Ledge (named, like Rose Lane, after the Rose family.) Perhaps 'Blueberry Ledge' would be more fitting since in August the ledge is hued in swaths of blueberries. Pick some in the morning and have blueberry pancakes for breakfast. The Prowhouse faces the east so the sunrise is truly spectacular. A clear night sky showcases the Milky Way — or a full moon mirrored by the sea. Beaches: there's a traditional white sand beach 15 minutes away at Roque Bluffs state park. But Howards Cove features more distinctive Downeast geography including a brown sand beach and a cave (melodramatically named Devil's Oven), as well as dozens of shaggy, seaweed-strewn tidal pools and impressive Acadia-esque rock formations — all within walking distance of the Prowhouse. The real gem of our area is, however, Jasper Beach. One of two beaches in the world consisting entirely of polished stones, this surreal beach is just 2+ minutes drive up the road. Feel free to go to Jasper Beach and collect a couple of these handsome stones for souvenirs or explore the cove with your kayak. Bring a picnic lunch and listen to the strange, burbling sound of the surf as it crashes over the stones. Beyond Howards Cove are the following areas of interest: Starboard Cove: a sleepy, former shipyard good for a morning stroll. Walking distance or short drive from the house. Point of Maine: a slightly longer walk beyond Starboard. More beaches. Quiet and unassuming residential area. More views of the sea. Bucks Harbor: working harbor where you can buy fresh lobster at BBS lobster pound. 5 minutes drive up Port Road. Yurts: search online for The Yurt Foundation for info. A 7 minute drive + 2 mile walk through the woods to a small yurt community. Your hosts can provide directions. Petroglyphs on Clarks Point: ask your hosts about where to search for these historic glyphs made by Passamaquoddy Indians. Roque Bluffs: state park and beach (swimming, kayaking, picnics and hikes) Machias: for restaurants, kayak rentals, local entertainment, and supplies (17 minutes up Port Rd.) Hosts the famed Blueberry Festival in August. Daytrips: - Cutler (for access to the spectacular Bold Coast hiking trails and Puffin tours) - Gardner Lake (fresh water swimming) - Lubec and Campobello Island (This is Canada so bring a Passport! 2800 acre Roosevelt Campobello International Park for FDR's summer home, birding, biking, hiking, boat tours, East Quoddy Lighthouse, and the Bay of Fundy. Fabulous day trip.) - Eastport (charming Easternmost city in the U.S.) - Jonesport and Beals Island (working harbor and nature reserve, golfing) - Moosehorn Nature Reserve (bald eagles and hiking trails) Getting Around: No public transport. Ways to explore: feet, car, boat. There are bike trails locally so you can bring a bike. Things to note: Please be aware of the following: Due to it's location on a ledge, the Prowhouse is not wheelchair accessible or easily accessible for the elderly or infirm. Howards Cove is a deep water cove meaning there are no stinky mud flats or eternally low tides! But deep water also means strong currents, freezing cold water, and dangerously steep cliffs — one of which the Prowhouse is built upon. If you're an experienced kayaker, this may be an ideal area to explore. But please take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety. Kayaking is entirely at your own risk. We do not recommend swimming in Howards Cove due to the unpredictable currents and cold water. Because of the cold water and steep cliffs, we discourage renters with small children or pets. Also note: while we don't have a TV set we do have wireless internet, lots of books and games and, again, lots of nature and beautiful views. The aforementioned is the reason we passed on the boob tube.
